I grew up in Southern California and, after accepting Christ as my savior in high school, received a bachelors of art in Human Development, with a minor in psychology, from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in 1991. I was heavily involved with the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship group there, where I met my college sweetheart! We married shortly after graduating and lived in Sacramento for 32 years. We now reside in Burlington, NC. My husband is a mechanical engineer, and, after working as a preschool teacher for several years, I became a stay-at-home mom and then homeschooled my three sons from preschool through 12th grade. All three of my children had special needs – Asperger’s Syndrome, stuttering and delayed learning, and auditory processing and sensory issues. Dealing with their issues involved many years of prayer, hard work, and specialized teaching and therapies, but all 3 of my sons have now graduated college and are each living out their individual callings in the serving industry, youth ministry and philosophy/writing. I have seen the incredible power of God to bring about deep transformation and redeem the years of pain, struggle, and heartache!

When my youngest son graduated, I experienced a new calling into the spiritual disciplines, and from that, into spiritual direction. As I received spiritual direction, I became drawn to this amazingly narrow, but incredibly deep ministry of companioning a fellow believer along their unique journey with God. I participated in Leadership Transformations Inc’s two year Selah training program in contemplative spiritual direction and graduated in May, 2021.

I have a strong passion for building connections, intimacy and self-awareness between people, and between people and God. I love meeting one-on-one with someone and searching with them for what God is up to in their lives. I feel my calling is to listen well, pray deeply, suggest observations, ask questions, and offer opportunities into silence and awareness of what the Holy Spirit is doing. I also have a deep interest in apologetics and worldview and have received a Certificate in Christian Apologetics from Biola University and taught a worldview/apologetics course to high-schoolers for 10 years. I have also gained much from personal study into attachment theory and how it impacts marriage, as well as into different types of personality testing (Enneagram, Myers-Briggs, Strength-finder, etc.). After 10 years serving in missions in Japan and Cambodia, I was overcome by a longing for more of God that I could never seem to satisfy, no matter how much I studied the Bible, prayed or served in ministry. I knew I couldn’t sustain my pace for the long haul unless I encountered God in fresh ways that would feed my thirsty soul.

This awareness led me to seek a spiritual director and eventually to SoulFormation, where I completed the Academy of Spiritual Formation (2018), the School of Spiritual Direction (2019), and was trained in Ignatian spirituality. All of this was life-changing!

My passion as a spiritual director is to come alongside others—at whatever stage of faith or life they are in--so they can be rooted in the love of Christ in order that their “doing” in ministry might flow from their “being” in Christ. I delight in helping others to encounter Jesus in fresh, creative ways that connects with their minds, hearts, and bodies.

I am passionate about helping my directees to cultivate a deeper awareness of God’s movement in them and around them, notice their response to that movement, grow in intimacy with God, and to live out the implications of this in every area of their lives.

In addition to offering spiritual direction, I enjoy leading people through the Ignatian Exercises, which is a life-changing journey with Jesus. Since 2021, I have led 30 people through the Ignatian Exercises.

I have an amazing wife, Alice, and three teenage kids. After 20 years of cross-cultural ministry in Asia, the Lord brought us back to the U.S. in order to more effectively care for the needs of our Autistic son. We are based in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and continue to serve locally and globally with our ministry organization, Novo (based in Anaheim, CA).

It brings deep joy for me to come alongside others as they seek to grow in their relationship with God. I continually marvel at how the Holy Spirit works uniquely with each person as they seek to discover His presence and care, in the midst of their life story. I received my training in spiritual direction through the MA in Spiritual Formation and Soul Care program at the Institute for Spiritual Formation, Talbot Seminary.

We all need companions on the spiritual journey, and I consider it a privilege to walk with others in this form of soul care. After years of missions and pastoral ministry with my husband, I have a special place in my heart for those in full time ministry, missionaries, and also for those in the healthcare professions (I hold an RN license though I am not now practicing). I am currently serving as a staff spiritual director at Talbot Seminary and am also available for direction online or at my home in Moreno Valley, CA.

My husband and I spent 11 years serving as church planters in Ecuador, with the Christian & Missionary Alliance. We worked with college students, women, and small group ministry leaders. My heart was forever changed by the beautiful people we served. We returned to Southern California in 2001 and planted a church in Moreno Valley, CA, where we continued to minister until 2018, while we also traveled extensively training and mentoring pastors and leaders in developing small group ministries in the church. We are currently serving in a Spanish speaking congregation, in Lynwood, CA, helping launch their small group ministry. It has been a great blessing to be back in Spanish ministries.

My husband and I have been married for 32 years and are appreciating the season of the empty nest. We have 3 lovely, adult daughters, 2 grandsons and a 3rd on the way! I love playing with my grandsons, family gatherings, enjoying coffee with a friend, spending time with God in the beauty of nature, and reading a good book.

Whether this is a time of heartache or a time of celebration, or a time of feeling lost, I know there is nuance to being understood and prayerfully perceiving what God may be up to in your life. I hope to be a place for you where that nuance is valued and held with care.

I believe transformation comes as we learn how kind God truly is and how loved we are by Christ. It comes as we learn how the Spirit is speaking in our lives in both the ordinary and extraordinary and we can walk in more freedom, love, and truth. It is while we shed the micro and macro lies that come up in everyday life circumstances that we get to see the beauty of the reality of our maker and the intimacy we have with Him and feel liberated to understand and be obedient to His will for our lives.

Background:

I gained my master’s from the Institute of Spiritual Formation at Biola University. Jesus miraculously healed so many areas of my heart during this time and I attribute the tool of Spiritual Direction to be a huge part of that journey; my hope is to allow for that same healing space for you. I've been in professional ministry for 8+ years as a Youth Pastor and Worship Leader and a certified Spiritual Director for an additional 6 years. I'm particularly passionate about guiding moms and college students, as well as teaching prayer to all ages. Prior to this training, I lived in NYC attending The New School University as a dance and choreography major. I'm very passionate about the arts, music, visual art, poetry, theater etc., and have found artistic expression to be a profound tool to connect with God. My husband is a professional dancer and cajon player and we love getting to do artistic projects together. My family are all Christians and involved in the arts or ministry professionally. We are very close and daily sharpen each other to walk in righteousness. We are committed to powerful and loving communication and strive to be an example of this and to lead others into doing family well, especially healing through trauma and brokenness. Becoming a spiritual director has been the single-most transformative decision I've made in the past 10 years. Receiving spiritual direction has been so life-giving to me. My friendship with Jesus has grown because I made a decision to regularly meet with a spiritual director. Because of this, I trained as a spiritual director with an organization called Soul Shepherding. I intentionally chose this certificate program for two reasons: 1) Because of Soul Shepherding's emphasis on bringing Christ-centered psychology into spiritual formation; and, 2) Because the founders of the program were personally mentored by Dallas and Jane Willard. Although I never knew Dallas Willard, his books and teachings have been very influential in my life and ministry. Participating in the Soul Shepherding Institutes showed me that God was not just giving me additional tools for helping people understand their friendship with Jesus, but I received a whole new paradigm for supporting others in their faith journey. It awakened within me a new way to minister to the growing needs within my church.

Before answering God's call to ordained ministry in The Wesleyan Church, I was a certified athletic trainer for a large sports medicine clinic. Currently I serve as the discipleship pastor in a mid-sized evangelical church where I oversee various ministries in spiritual formation, discipleship, small groups, church planting and multiplication, and staff development.

My wife, Jaclyn, and I have four children and six chickens. When I'm not cheering my kids on at their events I enjoy good coffee, conversation around fire pits, paddleboarding, hiking, and reading.

My walk with Jesus has has been a journey with many ups and downs. Twenty years ago, my life fell apart, and I was angry at God! Here is the amazing thing, it was at that point, my lowest point, that my faith begin to grow! It’s a long story, but I’ll just say, Jesus showed up in my pain. It was through Jesus that I could release my hurt, pain and bitterness to Him. It didn’t happen overnight, but through that process I’ve learned the gift of giving and receiving forgiveness, which actually opens your heart in ways I never dreamed possible. Through my desire to grow as a follower of Jesus, I discovered spiritual direction and felt called to learn more about this ministry.

I received my certification as a spiritual director through the School of Spiritual Direction with Sustainable Faith in 2021. The program was an intensive two year program which was life changing. I am a member of Spiritual Directors International (SDI) and ESDA. I follow their code of ethics in my practice, especially regard to confidentiality.

My work as a spiritual director is to focus my attention on your spiritual experience and points of self-discovery, and to explore with you God's movement in your life. I will not try to analyze or fix you. Spiritual direction is a conversation of the heart directed by the Spirit of God. It uses all our human faculties (intuition, emotion, imagination, sense and intellect) to discern God's presence for you as you understand it. Are you experiencing a change or shift that leaves you wondering about your faith and about how you know God? How does your prayer picture nurture intimacy with God? How does your church experience support your faith journey? What are the desires of your heart telling you?

I received my training and certification as a spiritual director from Christian Formation and Direction Ministries (CFDM) in Phoenix, AZ in 2013. The mystery of God's presence with each of us, is the hope that guides me as a spiritual director. I am an ordained pastor in The Wesleyan Church, with a current appointment as a professor of Pastoral Care and Counseling in the School of Theology and Ministry at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, IN. I was trained in Spiritual Direction from Evangelical Mennonite Seminary and SELAH. Both programs helped me value a contemplative approach to Spiritual Direction. I believe that God graciously reveals Himself to those who seek Him. It is my deep privilege to walk beside men and women who are hungry to know God more fully.

About Me

I have been in vocational ministry for over 21 years. For over 15 years, I have served as the Spiritual Formation Pastor at a multi-site mega church in Southern California. In addition to founding and developing the church’s spiritual formation and soul care program, I provide spiritual direction to the campus pastors and ministers. I have also had the privilege of training spiritual direction practices to hundreds of church leaders – both individually and in groups.

I earned a BS in Organizational Leadership from Biola University and an MA in Soul Care from Talbot Theological Seminary, where I also became certified as a spiritual director. I’ve been married to my high school sweetheart, Christina, for the last 32 years. We have 3 adult children and 2 grandchildren.

In my downtime, I like to golf, follow all things San Diego Padres, and enjoy good food with great friends.
