A spiritual director, teacher, minister, and innovative leader, Shonda was trained at Sustainable Faith, holds 2 Master's degree -MTS (Master of Theological Studies) and MA (Christian Spirituality & Formation) and is currently working on her Doctorate in Spiritual Formation/Soul Care from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University.
Shonda is a writer, director, and producer of award winning documentaries featuring the stories of some of the marginalized women in the Bible.
She absolutely loves helping women on their journey to be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ for the glory of God and for the sake of others.
She is married to her best friend, Kenneth, since 2003. Together they love and are loved by a blended family of five beautiful children and five amazing grandchildren. It is a joy and a privilege to accompany men and women on their unique journeys of faith. Of course, the real ‘director’ is God the Holy Spirit, who initiates and inspires an ever-deepening relationship with the Trinity. He is also the one that helps individuals develop a relationship with themselves and with others in their community. It is a beautiful thing to help people to dive deeper into prayer and draw closer to God in everyday life, and in the midst of difficulties, discover God’s care. It is a wonderous thing to see directees become aware of the sacred within the ordinary events of life and have them honestly share with God their feelings, doubts and questions. All within a safe, confidential space created in an atmosphere of prayer. It is a pleasure to see people become more like Christ and experience the fruits of the Spirit and move into a grace-full life of love and service.

I came to the US at an early age from El Salvador and I am fully bilingual in Spanish. I have been able provide spiritual direction to people from various countries who now live and minister in the U.S.

Trained through Denver Seminary’s Spiritual Direction Certification Program in Colorado, I offer direction to both individuals and groups. While I’ve worked as an ordained minister, chaplain, marriage and family therapist, and professor the thread of meaning woven through all of these jobs has been the joy of helping people experience how God can meet them in their deepest needs. I have a special place in my heart for those who care for others. Hence, I feel called to care for the caregiver.

In terms of how I understand the ministry of spiritual direction, I resonate very much with the words of Gordon T. Smith: “A Spiritual Director offers spiritual guidance and companionship to help make sense of our faith journey, interpret the significant markers along the way, and encourage us, particularly through the more difficult transitions and valleys of our pilgrimage.” This is precisely what I hope to offer my directees.

I would love to become better acquainted and accompany you along your spiritual journey. I currently meet clients online (via Facetime, Zoom, etc), and in person. As someone who enjoys being active and loves nature, I also offer direction while casually walking in a local park or trail. I'm generally available during business hours on weekdays, with some exceptions. Our first consultation is free.

I graduated with an MA in Spiritual Formation and Soul Care from the Institute for Spiritual Formation, Talbot Seminary. I love meeting with those who are learning to live into the fullness of the abundant life in Christ. I have three married children and a wonderful husband of 39 years. My husband and I have been volunteer staff with Cru (Campus Crusade for Christ) for more than 30 years. I give spiritual direction in Bakersfield, California, at Biola University/Talbot Seminary in the LA area, and to Christian workers in other countries by Zoom. Being able to pray with you and for you in your journey as you notice God in big and small ways is a gift that I do not take for granted.

In 25 years of ministry experience, leading prayer groups and bible studies, I have met with women from all ages and types of backgrounds. God gave me a desire to serve in a new way through spiritual direction. He has used spiritual direction to bring clarity, hope, peace, and a deeper relationship with Him. Being able to notice where God is and what he is saying has been transforming in my life.

I completed my spiritual direction certification through Christos. I own a bookstore and I love to travel, play with my grandchildren, read and have people over to sit on my back deck.

Spiritual Formation, the slowest movement on Earth, is only labeled this way because there is an ample time invested in its practice and exploration. As a former spiritual director at Biola University, I run with the notion that God has already been working in the person's life before we begin our meetings. Our task is to explore events and come to discovery of what God has been doing in the midst of all our struggles, trials, and honest mistakes/effort. Being willing to go deep to explore our own past may provide us with some insight into what God is doing in our present circumstances. I partner with directees to identify what is going on in their lives and help discover what the Holy Spirit longs to reveal to the person about themselves and their walk with God. I choose the position of empowering the directee to more effectively tell their own stories as we begin to explore life with God.

As a trained diversity ambassador and missionary educator from Azusa Pacific University, I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of settings helping international students discover truth about the Bible and the basic tenets of the Gospel message. 20 years in education has enabled me to develop a strong sense of self in teaching and has also alerted me to my own inner desire to help mentor others in order to become their better selves. I now have made it a personal goal to be a better listener to the thoughts, feelings, and attitudes of the heart in order to more properly understand someone's experience with God. This "tuning-in" has become a base position for helping others grow in their awareness of themselves with God.

As an Asian American, I have also had some exposure to exploring my own past to discover the way Honor/Shame has largely influenced and somewhat discolored my own image of who I was in Christ. With my own discovery about ways of being in my culture, I have found it helpful to focus on the love of God to determine a more balanced understanding of how I am accepted in Christ, and having this mindset helps me as I begin to help others who might have similar areas of trauma with guilt and shame. Although this is not my main ministerial duty in spiritual direction, I do hope to show sensitivity whenever I find this relevant to the directee's own story.
In the end, I serve to promote wellness in the way of exploring life honestly with God. As we begin, I pray that you may be led with courage to find the right spiritual director for you, and if I can serve that purpose, I hope that our paths would cross soon.

I have over 25 years of varied ministry experiences -- I served the gamut from intern to lead pastor, from leading teams in a large church to working bi-vocationally in a new church plant, and both as a board member and a full-time employee in a non-profit. For over a decade I have given my life to helping women and men feel seen, heard, and known. It has been an honor to journey with people through some of their darkest moments.

I am a trained Spiritual Director with an MA in Spiritual Formation and Soul Care and an MA in Christian Leadership and Ministry from Biola's Talbot Theological Seminary.

I currently practice individual and group spiritual direction in the Long Beach and Orange County area and enjoy being with others as a Staff Director at Talbot Seminary.

My heart and passion is to help people grow in God, come out of hiding, and to live with meaning and purpose. I have served in many capacities in the local church and beyond. I have been a pastor’s wife for over fourteen years, in full time ministry for several years, and have invested so much of my strength into the betterment of God’s people.

I love offering spiritual companionship and a safe space for those who need a refuge. I have led many retreats, camps, spoken at church services nationally and internationally, mentored young girls, and have empowered women from all walks of life to discover the beauty of their true selves. My sweet spot in ministry and direction has been with those who have traumatic experiences, deep insecurities, guilt or shame, and those living in darker days.

Hi I'm Paul! I am a 31-year-old Korean American male currently living in Orange County, California. Throughout the years I've worked primarily with college students and young adults, helping them to navigate how God is speaking and taking action within their respective seasons of life. If I were to describe my spiritual direction style, I'd say that I'm deeply caring and constructively concrete. My ministry of spiritual direction was born out of a vision of God’s ongoing hospitality to us, which He invites us to experience as we open our souls in hospitality to Him. When I offer spiritual direction, it is about setting a table for us and God, providing space to come as we are to talk with and direct our gazes to Jesus – the one who sees us, loves us, knows us, and sustains us.

Ever since I have been drawn to conversations exploring where God intersects with the joys and challenges of real life. In 2016, I began having these conversations as a spiritual director.

I believe each of us is God’s beloved and the spiritual journey is primarily a journey of allowing the love of God to find its way into deeper and deeper parts of our heart. Born and raised in Hong Kong, I have been residing in Pasadena, California with my husband for almost 30 years during which time I had served in our home church in children, youth, young adults and church board ministries. This gave me an insight into the challenges faced by and the deep longing of serious followers of Christ and church leaders. Henri Nouwen describes hospitality as, “...primarily the creation of a free space where the stranger can enter and become a friend…Hospitality is not to change people, but to offer them space where change can take place.” I approach spiritual direction as a form of hospitality, a place to help you open up your heart and soul to the hospitality of God. My desire is not to change you, but to listen with you for the Holy Spirit’s invitations and promptings for greater intimacy, connection, healing, and well being. One of my favorite quotes is by Zora Neale Hurston, “Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place.” I think that quote beautifully captures the work of the Holy Spirit in direction. The Spirit woos your soul to come out of hiding and into the truth of who you are before a God who lavishly loves you.

Some tidbits about my life: I’ve been married since 2000 and have two daughters, one of whom has special needs, both of whom I homeschool (one of the most exhausting, but fulfilling joys of my life). I consider myself an amateur naturalist in that I love all things related to nature, enjoy exploring the great outdoors, and then journaling my nature surprises. Need to name a cloud formation or local bird? Then, I’m your gal! I’m an early 20th Century British literature lover and an all around Anglophile. Additionally, I love to putter with various art techniques/mediums to create work that only a mother could love. And I do believe that laughter is the best medicine.

I received my MA in Christian Apologetics from Biola University in 2005 and my MA in Spiritual Formation and Soul Care from the Institute of Spiritual Formation, Talbot Seminary in 2015. My husband is an artist, my sister is a writer, and other family members are in the entertainment industry. Thus, I have a heart for creatives as well as for parents (especially those with atypical /neurodivergent children), and women.

Hello! My calling into spiritual direction began at a low point in my life. I was discerning a job change, feeling overwhelmed with life and struggling with my own limitations. God not only helped me through that dark time with the help of a spiritual director, He inspired me to become a spiritual director to help others as I’ve been helped (2 Corinthians 1:3-7). With that said, I am convinced spiritual direction is for everyone; it’s a necessary part of our Christian discipleship. You don’t have to be at a low point in your life as we are all in need of prayerful companionship, whether we recognize it or not!

Spiritual Direction is help given by one Christian to another that enables him/her to pay attention to God’s personal communication, respond in ways that deepen intimacy with God and to live out the consequences of that relationship in this world. It is prayerful companionship, hospitable space - grounded in grace and rooted in trust. In a world of chaos, we offer contemplative tools that help us notice, listen and discern the presence and movements of God. Since the focus is not on advice, problem-solving or goal-setting, we exercise restraint with our personal views, providing a wide open space for you to meet with God and invite the Holy Spirit’s work within. Spiritual direction is a way of life. The Lord desires to be with us in season and out.

Jodi Chung graduated with a BS in Neurobiology from The University of Kansas, an MDiv from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and is a certified Spiritual Director through Selah. Since 2006 she has served in youth and adult ministries at West Houston Chinese Church and Parkway United Methodist. She currently serves at Wheaton Chinese Alliance Church in the Chicago area and an organization for women called Refuge for Strength (https://www.refugeforstrength.com). She is a conference speaker, spiritual director, podcast guest on multiple podcasts, and the mother of three adopted children from Henan, China. She has been married to Michael for over 15 years and currently resides in Naperville, IL with their kids and extended family. Jodi is particularly passionate about developing listening groups in churches, teaching others the art and discipline of listening to God on behalf of one another in community.

About Me

These days, we live in a world filled with noise, unrest, busyness and fear. The days can be so long, filled with hectic schedules, responsibility and uncertainty, leaving many feeling exhausted, anxious and angry. And yet, the years flit away quickly, always plugged in yet leaving us seemingly disconnected from God, others and ourselves. This daily life has a way of distracting us and we don’t always know how to detach and hear the voice of God calling us the Beloved. Instead, we become consumed with other voices that try to tell us who we are. Henri Nouwen says that we mistakenly believe that we are what we have, we are what we do, or we are what others say about us.

Here, through spiritual direction, I hope, you will find a safe place to land – to unplug, to disconnect from the busyness, to detach from the activity, for just a moment. This is a time to tune into the Voice that created us into being and calls each of us beloved.

Crisis hit my life nearly 10 years ago. Although I had been walking with Jesus for nearly 30 years, my life with God became dry and my faith rhythms were no longer sustaining me. I knew the “right” theology, and the “right” Scripture passages. I knew a lot about God. And yet, my heart and my life were far from reflecting and living the knowledge I carried in my head. But God, in His infinite kindness, led me on a journey of spiritual formation and spiritual direction that grounded me in His love and in His Presence. During this time of crisis, spiritual direction, listening groups, the Ignatian Exercises, contemplative prayer and the Enneagram became anchors that nurtured my hungry soul and led me into the reality of God’s care and nearness to me. I experienced listening and being listened to in a new way – as a love that sees without judgment or carrying agendas of fixing. I began to recognize God’s activity and invitations in my own life. It was then that God awakened the desire within me to offer this same gift of listening and unconditional love to others.

My training includes a Spiritual Direction and Spiritual Supervision certificate from TLC (Transformational Listening Center), an Advanced Spiritual Formation certificate from Moody Bible Institute and certification as an Integral Coach. I specialize in the Enneagram as a powerful tool of self-knowledge as well as the Ignatian Exercises, contemplative prayer practices and spiritual exercises. I have also worked as a Financial Controller for a small business for the past 10 years, a space where God often invites me to bring my contemplative practices into action.

My home is a hub of activity and creativity, a welcome respite for our family, which includes 6 children, 4 married, 8 grandchildren, and many extended family and friends. As a 1 on the Enneagram, I’ve learned the importance of engaging my creative side and do so by reading, cooking and baking from scratch, learning new things, quiet contemplation, taking long walks in nature and engaging in sustainable living practices for my family.
