We all have a story. It's a story that is still being written. My passion lies in walking alongside people in a relationship of soul care, whether God feels close or far away.

Having received my training at Talbot School of Theology’s Institute for Spiritual Formation (ISF), I offer individual and group spiritual direction. During much of my career of 25 years in music and education, I have been curious about how God works in my life and in the life of the church. Eugene Peterson says, "Perseverance is not the result of our determination; it is the result of God’s faithfulness.”

In spiritual direction, I aim to create safe spaces for discernment, transitions, grief, and the ordinary highs and lows of everyday life and spirituality. Whether you are a stay-at-home parent, a lay leader, or a pastor, if you find prayer difficult or confusing, you are not alone.

I offer a free, 30-minute introductory session with no obligation to continue. We can meet in Santa Ana/North Tustin or online.

It is a privilege to accompany people as they attend to their life with God, Christ's work, and the Holy Spirit's leading and then discover greater freedom, peace, and joy. After seminary at Gordon-Conwell, I served as a campus minister for several years. I later pursued a certificate in Spiritual Direction from the PAX Center for Christian Spiritual Formation and I currently work as a minister of spiritual formation for Intervarsity New England. A few areas that I am passionate about include emotional/mental health, preventing ministry burnout, and being part of a global, diverse Church. I have a special place in my heart for cross-cultural workers and those experiencing burnout in ministry. When I am not working, I enjoy reading, playing soccer, hanging out with family and friends, and singing with my church worship team. I have had the privilege of walking with Jesus for over 50 years, and delight to witness the work of Spirit in the lives of other human beings, each created in God's image.

Professionally, in addition to my spiritual direction certification through the Epiphany Academy of Formative Spirituality (Pittsburgh, PA), I am a certified embodiment coach and an ordained elder in the Free Methodist Church of N. America. I am a semi-retired seminary professor. (If "academic credentialing is of interest to you, I have several Master's degrees, including an MDiv., and also a Ph.D.)

Especially important in my personal formation have been that I:
- was raised as a "pastor's kid";
- was originally ordained in an urban (primarily black Pentecostal) church renowned for the ministry of racial, gender, generational, and socio-economic reconciliation;
- studied with Father Adrian van Kaam (a world-renowned theorist in formative spirituality, both human and Christian)
- have the privilege of close friendships with Hasidic Jewish people
- am a founding member of a church committed to modeling co-gendered Christian worship services

I taught spiritual formation for nearly two decades at Northeastern Seminary (Rochester, NY), and helped the seminary create an MA program in Spiritual Formation, as well as a program for an Advanced Certificate in Spiritual Direction ("Advanced" meaning that the program requires a certain theological rigor alongside specific training for the ministry of spiritual direction). Offering retreats, both in person and online, has been part of my calling for many years.

While the majority of my spiritual direction ministry has been in service of Christian leaders (pastors, chaplains, spiritual directors, etc.), it is my privilege to support anyone through the ministry of spiritual direction (including persons who do and do not consider themselves "Christian," people who identify as being on the autism spectrum, and people exploring gender and sexuality issues themselves or companioning family members who are doing so).

I identify as an Enneagram 1, Wing 9.
My primary dispositions, as witnessed to by others, are faith, joy, kindness, compassion, and non-judgmental curiosity.

As a Spiritual Director, my heart is to help people slow down, listen well, and respond to the gentle invitations of the Spirit. I was trained in spiritual direction through the Institute for Spiritual Formation at Talbot School of Theology, where I also earned an MA in Spiritual Formation and Soul Care. I hold additional graduate degrees in philosophy and clinical psychology, which shape a thoughtful and holistic approach to the soul.

I grew up in Ohio and live in South Carolina with my wife and our son. I currently minister part-time in the discipleship ministries of our church and meet with ministry leaders as a spiritual director.

I have been profoundly shaped by how the Lord has ministered to me through the ups and downs in various seasons of ministry, significant life transitions, times of doubt and fear and every-day life. The fact that Jesus has opened the way for us to walk WITH the Triune God has deeply impacted my own life.

After completing undergraduate and graduate degrees in cross-cultural studies, I served as a pastor and then as a global worker in Spain with a team who ministered to the North African community. After transitioning back to the U.S., I completed a two year spiritual directors training program through Selah (Leadership Transformations) in 2018.

I am a pastor at heart and approach spiritual direction as a response to the Lord’s call on my life to come alongside others in a way that helps support their own walk with Him through seasons of life and ministry. Over the years, I have ministered as a spiritual director to pastors, global workers and chaplains.

I am able to meet in person, by phone or by the video conferencing app of your choice. I also facilitate personal and small group prayer retreats.

I am Chin Chen Esther and I am a Spiritual Director. I completed my training with Spiritual Growth Ministries, New Zealand in 2021.

I have been receiving regular personal spiritual direction since 2010. I am grateful to God and to my own spiritual directors who have helped me attend to my interior life and to the invitations from God. I desire to encourage others to know God beyond intellectual awareness and to become increasingly aware of God in their life experience. Spiritual Direction
Spiritual direction is increasing awareness of God in the midst of both good and challenging life experiences and facilitating submission to God’s will. It is not about resolving a problem but making that problem a place to meet God. It is abiding in His presence, listening to His voice and direction, and moving into deeper love and experience with God.
Spiritual Direction is Present focused

Spiritual Healing
Spiritual healing is gentle help untangling past hurts and habits in order to be free to be yourself in the present and future. Sometimes when you have trouble moving forward, there might be something from the past that needs to be tended to. An outside perspective and trained facilitator is often crucial for this healing. Spiritual healing can involve a battle with one of your enemies- the world, the flesh, or the devil. The Holy Spirit is the best surgeon I have ever met and has some of the best tasting medicines I have ever tried.
Spiritual Healing is Past focused

My training allows me to offer a unique and customized mix of these three. The goal of all of my sessions is to connect you deeper with your loving Father, with Jesus- the one who calls you Friend, and with the Holy Spirit, who is a far better guide than myself. It is an adventurous Journey that I am honored to walk with you!

I also offer identity coaching, a unique process that results in identity statements that ground you in the person God created you specifically to be.

I have served in local church ministry for over 25 years including planting a church with my husband David.
We also have sabbatical homes open to global ministry workers.

It is truly a blessing and one of my favorite things to journey with someone on the path toward deeper knowing and being known by Jesus. The gift of the Holy Spirit dwelling literally inside of us gives us direct access to our Father, our Savior, our Friend, our Comforter, etc.

There are times when life is SO hard to handle that we can barely put one-foot forward. And then there are other times/seasons of life that are so sweet and full of delight. In relationship with God, sometimes we feel His nearness so close that praise is continually on our lips. While other times our circumstances cry out against His character/promises and we lament and wonder why He has forsaken us. We need space to work out our salvation with fear and trembling. In the journey of sanctification we face all the realities of life with God, while the Spirit moves/grows/changes our hearts to be more in the image of Christ

What would it be like for you to lean-into this reality in your everyday circumstances? If we believe God speaks to us, then let’s take time to listen and learn how to listen.

Spiritual Direction is a place to question, to grieve, to doubt, to be broken, to wonder, to be thankful, to delight, to search deeper, and to receive. The more we engage in this type of personal interaction with God, the more our hearts are exposed to His love, His healing, and His heart.

This can powerfully change us. It’s so vital to our Christian life and our experience of our world to better attune our hearts and minds through integrating our emotional/spiritual experiences of God with our theological knowledge of Him. Many times, even healthy community, church, bible study, etc. can’t provide the opportunity to sit with a trained listener and explore the deep, inner workings of all God is doing in a current season.

This is so important to me, that I practice full-time Soul-Care ministry to help people on this journey. I want to train others how to know God through knowing themselves better and how to know themselves through knowing God better, so that it forms us and the way we view the world.

My goal is to help enable you to pay attention to the work and the movements of the Spirit in your current circumstances, so that you can grow closer to Jesus and closer to others.

I offer a variety of resources and practices for growth. I offer online and in-person appointments. My husband is a Spiritual Director as well, we are the co-founders of Soul-Care.com, speak and lead retreats, and travel to provide Soul-Care for the Church. We both have an MA in Spiritual Formation & Soul-Care from Talbot Seminary.

I love the practice, experience and art of spiritual direction.

One of my favorite places in the world is sitting across from another person, made in the image of God, and assisting in learning to listen and discern the Holy Spirit and respond to His guidance.

Spiritual direction is a beautiful training ground for Life in the Spirit, the practice of Sanctification. For those who have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, who have tasted of the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and long for more.

It is literally working out your salvation with fear and trembling as God works and wills His good pleasure in you.

The spiritual direction experience can be described as a co-journey, where we look at the map of your heart, your story, where you came from and where you’re going, and begin to notice the patterns, movements and promptings of the Holy Spirit. What is God saying this season of your life?

These brief moments in spiritual direction create an everlasting impact on the soul and begin to anchor the soul in eternal hope, an experience of the Presence of God which will someday last forever.

This can foster an ongoing conversation between you and God everywhere you go, not matter what you do.

There is something so precious and sacred about spiritual direction. When else do you have the freedom to speak from the holiest place inside your being. How often do you intentionally step into your story?

What would it be like to share the ups and downs of your story with another person, trained to pay attention to God-inside-you?

I love what Wendell Berry says, "There are no unsacred places, only sacred and desecrated." What areas of your life are sacred to you and God? What parts of your story feel desecrated?

Spiritual direction works to flourish you, body and soul, through tending like a gardener to your inner life and outer circumstances and begins to comprehend and partner with the unfolding of His promises to you in the Bible.

This is an opportunity to be honest, to struggle, to wonder, to grieve, to ask, to enjoy, to celebrate, to shed the conformed patterns of this world and step into a renewed mind that proves the good, pleasing and ultimately perfect will of God.

Take a step into significance.

In spiritual direction, I seek to offer a safe and sacred space for honest exploration of life with God. My desire is to help individuals listen for the Spirit’s movement and discern how they are being invited to live in deeper communion with God and with themselves.

For nearly 20 years, I served as a pastor in the San Francisco Bay Area, walking with people through both joy and heartbreak. Finding my own spiritual director during a time of disorientation and burnout was a profound gift, which led me into this ministry of spiritual companionship. I especially enjoy accompanying pastors and church leaders, who often struggle to find space to tend their own souls in the midst of full-time ministry.

My wife and I live with our four children in the San Francisco Bay Area. I’m an ordained Anglican priest, trained spiritual director, and educator completing doctoral studies in spiritual formation. I lead Deum Spiritual Care and offer direction both virtually and in person. My approach is hospitable, Christ-centered, and open to anyone longing for greater connection, clarity, or peace.

Whether in spiritual direction or in curated retreats, my desire is to create spacious places for you to bring the experiences and situations of your everyday life into prayerful consideration with God - to listen to God’s invitation to know Him more, know yourself more and to discover living in deeper intimacy with Him.

As founder of The Soul Care Place, my hope is to create a place where the community of Christ has the opportunity to experience greater wholeness, healing, and intimacy with the God who loves us.

God captured my heart for ministry when I was 16. These last 30 years have spanned working in both non-profit and ministry sectors in volunteer and pastoral staff capacities, walking alongside students and leaders in ministry and business.

I am passionate about coming alongside others and attending to God’s voice in ordinary moments.

In addition to my work in spiritual direction, I companion others in the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises, and create and lead retreats and workshops that incorporate creative and experiential elements to help retreatants discover new avenues for connecting with God. Most retreats range from half-day to full-day retreats for small groups or organizations, but can be customized to meet your group's needs.

As a recovering perfectionist and overachiever, I have found play, creativity, and slowing down to be life-giving practices in my spiritual rhythm.

A few of my favorite things: spending time with my husband (learning Latin dance is a favorite pastime) and family, especially my granddaughter—you might spot us paddleboarding, playing laser tag, or having fun with paint.

I am available for spiritual direction and the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises, creating and leading retreats and workshops, and speaking on topics of soul care, spiritual formation, and spiritual practices.

Spiritual direction is a safe, confidential place to bring any part or aspect of your life and to discern together where God is at work. Spiritual direction is not counseling or mentoring but instead a way to bear witness and direct attention to the work of God in someone’s life.

My favorite description of spiritual direction is holy listening. It is "about listening to people's stories, listening for glimpses of grace and hints of the holy, listening for the breakthrough presence of God in the midst of everyday life." We are not meant to walk the spiritual journey alone. We are meant to journey together! I consider it an honor and privilege to sit with another and to discern together where God is at work within.

I have recently discovered the joys of knitting and delight in making slightly imperfect baby blankets for new little ones. I will almost always say yes to a long walk, travel to explore new places, a good book, a delicious cup of coffee, or a deep soul conversation. I can often be found meandering through a New York City park, or hiking in the Hudson Valley, marveling at God's creation.

Most importantly, I am learning to find true rest and freedom as a beloved daughter of the Most High.

About Me

Jim and Lindsay Long are Senior Spiritual Directors and Retreat leaders working in partnership with Soul Shepherding. They host the four retreats of the Soul Shepherding Institute: Spiritual Formation, Spiritual and Psychological Development, Soul Care Ministry, and Relationally Healthy Leadership.

Jim and Lindsay are both graduates of the Soul Shepherding Institute and Spiritual Direction Training Program. They were involved in bringing the first Soul Shepherding Cohort to the East coast and served as volunteers for all four retreats . Afterward, Bill and Kristi encouraged them to lead an East coast Institute Cohort themselves and in May of 2024, they completed their first cohort of Institute Retreats.

The Retreats are held at their home in Kennesaw, Georgia, just north of Atlanta, and are limited to 10-12 participants. Participants stay with Jim and Lindsay and several friends of the couple who are supportive of their ministry and live nearby. The smaller number of participants allows for more one-on-one time with Jim and Lindsay, shared mealtimes, and fellowship time after evening sessions in their comfy home. Jim and Lindsay also host One Day Retreats as well.

Outside of Soul Shepherding, Jim is a lay leader in his local International Churches of Christ congregation in Marietta, Georgia. He works as an SAP Sr. Consultant and Training Lead.

Jim also has extensive experience working in recovery ministry within the church. Having been in recovery from alcohol and drugs for over 30 years, he has led recovery groups and been a 12-step sponsor to many throughout his recovery.

Jim and his wife Lindsay live in Kennesaw, Georgia, and have three adult children and a Bernese Mountain dog named Henri.
