My background is in the church and academia, where I have served in a variety of roles for 35 years. My personal spiritual perspective is what I would call contemplative evangelical and firmly orthodox. I have been ordained in the Evangelical Free Church of America and hold a Doctor of Ministry in leadership and a Ph.D. in socioeconomics (Spiritual Capital Theory). I have written or contributed to five books. I have taught and coached many leaders in my various roles and now feel called to embrace the vocation of spiritual direction on a more full time basis. I have completed three years of training as a spiritual director and been under supervision.

My view of spiritual direction can be summarized by Frank J. Houdek in his book, "Guided by the Spirit."

Spiritual direction is a conversation, a dialogue, between two people. In such a conversation one person aides another, often by a process of question and answer, to express his or her experience of personal faith and mystery.

My goal in direction, through this spiritual conversation, is to assist my directees in discerning how God is presently at work in their lives, so that they might more consciously and continually experience His presence in their lives.

Helping people deepen their intimacy with Jesus is a sacred privilege that I feel honored to be a part of when people meet with me in spiritual direction. I am a native Southern Californian and attended CSU Long Beach where I received a BA in Psychology with an emphasis in creative writing. After graduating, I went on to work in the medical field for 12 years before entering into Pastoral ministry in the early 2000s. In 2001, I began the MDiv program at Talbot Seminary, part of Biola University. While pursuing my MDiv I worked as an associate pastor in the Long Beach area for 11 years.

I received my MDiv in 2013 with an emphasis on Spiritual Formation and Soul Care under the instruction of Dr. John Coe at the Institute for Spiritual Formation. I have served on staff with Talbot's Spiritual Formation Core program, providing spiritual direction to graduate students and staff alike. I have also served as an Adjunct faculty member at Biola University. There I had the privilege of leading spiritual formation cohort groups and retreats for graduate students.

Currently, I serve as the Manager of the Certificate in Spiritual Direction Training program and as a Sr. Spiritual Director with Soul Shepherding - www.soulshepherding.org. I am the faculty director for the program where I help train pastors and missionaries to be spiritual directors. I also provide sabbatical coaching, lead retreats and guest speak on topics related to spiritual formation among other responsibilities.

Having served in pastoral ministry for the past 20+ years, I have a real understanding of the joys and struggles that pastors face as they serve in a high people-oriented role. Over the years I hit a wall of burnout and compassion fatigue that propelled me to receive care from a gifted, caring pastor, therapist and spiritual director. I have come through that season having a renewed call to come alongside pastors and ministry professionals facing similar challenges while serving. I believe God has given me a specialty in helping them "tend to their own souls" through the gift of spiritual direction, Sabbatical care, soul care retreats, and pastor Soul Care groups.

Dave and his wife of 32 years reside in Lakewood, CA. They have 4 adult children and 1 still making her way through high school. We attend New Life Community Church in Artesia where I serve as a Life Group leader and provide soul care to the church staff and leadership.

Dave loves to eat Thai food, camp at the beach, ride bikes, watch football, listen to all kinds of music on vinyl with friends and spend time with his family in the pool or at the beach.

Spiritual direction is simply described as a space for co-listening to the Holy Spirit. The foundational belief is that God is always communicating with us. God speaks and listens, both intentionally and intimately. Spiritual direction is a time of intentional reflection on your life and relationship with God, moving towards more openness and awareness of God's communication and presence in every corner of your inner and outer life. My goal is to be a second set of ears as we listen for God's subtle movement in your everyday life, as well as in times of big life decisions or changes. I find tremendous joy in creating contemplative, safe spaces for others to connect with God in a way that doesn’t often happen in ordinary life. Spiritual Direction has made a profound impact in my own work and ministry, and I feel honored to sit in this sacred space with others to witness the ways God is at work.

I am a trained educator and social worker whose passions have converged with the practice of Spiritual Direction. My work experience includes teaching middle school in South Side Chicago, working with YWAM in Taiwan, Nepal and Ukraine, and currently facilitating economic empowerment with survivors of homelessness, addiction, and sex trafficking in New York City.

As you can imagine, burnout is real in this work, and when I started seeing a Spiritual Director, it felt like a lifeline. The slow contemplative space it created has been transformative in my life and work. As I started training to become a Spiritual Director, I found that it is my passion to walk with others as they seek to live and work out of a sustaining connection with God. My heart as a Spiritual Director is to create spaces for people to honestly share their journey with God, both the good and difficult, and look for the graces that show how God is at work.

I studied Nonprofit Management at Columbia School of Social Work and completed my certificate in Spiritual Direction and certification in supervising Spiritual Directors through Sustainable Faith’s School of Spiritual Direction. I finished an Apprenticeship in the Spiritual Exercises through OCL and am certified to accompany individuals through the 19th Annotation of the Ignatian Exercises. I am a co-founder of The Stillness Collective where I lead contemplative retreats in the city. I am currently creating a retreat center in Lancaster, PA called Magnolia Cottage where I envision a space for rest and contemplation.

In my free time, I enjoy caring for my vegetable plot in a community garden in Harlem, experimenting with recipes using the harvested produce, running in Central Park, and off-the-beaten path travel.

When we meet we will spend our time together in the presence of the Holy Spirit to look, listen, discern and move closer to the heart of God. This is not a quick process but a long obedience in the same direction. We will spend a lot of time in quiet listening to the Lord.
What brought me to desire to be a spiritual companion? My journey to this ministry was after 20+ years of walking with Jesus-I wanted more. I found myself tired and weary in my life and I knew the life promised in Scripture was very different. My desire grew for more of God and more of the abundant life Jesus tells us about. (John 10:10) So I began my search for more of Jesus and over the last 8 years he has met me. Every. Step. Of. The. Way. A way that brought me to enter training as a spiritual director in September 2020. God’s lovingkindness has been evident throughout and I am grateful to be able to share that with others. My desire for more has not waned but only grown as I continue to seek the path he has laid out before me. In May 2022 I completed training with the Sustainable Faith School of Spiritual Direction.

After many years of pastoring I discovered the gift of meeting with a spiritual director. It was a much needed space with a listening companion for the deep places of my heart. Over time, I was so delighted to discover that God had been naturally leading me into this ministry for others - recognizing it was what I had been doing for decades. That discovery led me to pursue training which I received through CFDM - Los Angeles, more specific training for the Ignatius exercises through the Lanteri Center in Denver, and supervision through Sustainable Faith.
I am deeply grateful to journey with others in the practice of spiritual direction (as well as the ongoing ways my spiritual director & supervisor journey with me).
My husband and I (of 40 years) have three grown children, and fifteen grandchildren. We currently live on several acres on the east side of Denver with chickens, horses, gardens.

I consider each one’s story to be holy, and I am deeply humbled to be a listening companion to whoever God brings my way.

I have become gratefully aware of God’s ever-present faithfulness in the seasons of life through 34 years of marriage and as the mother of three grown children, and grandmother of five. Becoming a widow unexpectedly in early 2018 has resulted in a deepening of every aspect of my spiritual life. Previously, as a result of other profound life changes, I was drawn into an ongoing re-evaluation of my life and faith, and what it means to be open to God’s loving examination and companionship.

Most recently, after living my entire life in Nevada, I spent a year and a half in Iowa caring for my elderly parents in their home. After their deaths, I relocated yet again to Valparaiso, Indiana to be near family.

One of the greatest gifts given to me in these many years of change and loss has been the gracious listening of a spiritual director. To sit with another in God’s presence and be received and heard is a healing place. This process has helped me to notice more fully what God is doing and saying and how I am responding, so that healing continues.

I believe the ministry of spiritual direction is an important and effective gift offering ongoing growth towards clarity, liberation, and wholeness in all of life, as individuals learn to notice and respond to the movement of God.

I received formal training at the Institute for Spiritual Direction at Stillpoint in Las Vegas, graduating in 2012, and later completed Advanced Formation training, with further experience in leading the Ignatian Exercises, retreats and small group studies in the Bible and spiritual classics. I am an oblate of St. Andrew's Abbey in Valyermo, California.

I remain grateful for the transforming, healing work of God, in my life and in the lives of others.

As a committed member of an international missionary team for over 20 years, I had the privilege of serving as a Pastor's wife, Teacher, and the Director of Preschool/Kindergarten at Access International School. But my greatest joy was to support women in Soul Care, especially with Inner Healing Prayer.

When we came back to the US, I learned about Spiritual Direction as part of Soul Care. The ESDA describes a spiritual director as “a trained listener who cares about hearing your story. Directors look for the work of the Holy Spirit in your life and help you respond to God’s invitations to a deeper relationship.”

Spiritual direction ignited my desire to provide soul care to women. I realized the Lord was calling me to this ministry, so I enrolled in the Healing Care Ministries’ certificate in Spiritual Formation and the Art of Spiritual Direction. Through the program, I acquired listening skills, learned how to pose meaningful questions, and how to come alongside another as a spiritual companion; I also encountered the Lord in beautiful ways. I experienced His deep love for me and others. I also learned to “be still” and engage both my Right and Left Brain. In short, I experienced God more fully and grew closer to Him!

As your spiritual director led by the Holy Spirit, I will help provide a space for you to be in the presence of the Lord where we can explore your experiences. You can share your joys, fears, desires, and struggles and, if needed, heal from past hurts and wounds. We can find ways to deepen your relationship with our Loving God.

Hello, my name is Eric. My relationship with God through Jesus Christ has provided significant meaning and security throughout the highs and lows of my life. I believe that it is God’s intention to transform all of us to become like Jesus, perfectly loving God, our neighbors, ourselves, and God’s creation, with our myriad personalities, passions, life experiences, and cultural contexts. I am a former college athlete, from Princeton University, where I majored in Religion, but lost my faith. Shortly after graduating, Jesus reconciled me and brought me back to faith in Him. I pursued professional golf for a brief period before sensing a call to ministry with the organization College Golf Fellowship in 2013, where I continue to minister primarily to college and professional golfers. In 2013 I was introduced to the concept of Spiritual Formation through a local pastor, and after getting married in 2015, I began taking classes at the Institute of Spiritual Formation at Talbot School of Theology through Biola University. I graduated with a Masters in Spiritual Formation and Soul Care in 2021, using the skills acquired through this program to help others on their journeys with God to become more like Jesus. Receiving Spiritual Direction has been a significant part of my life with God, and it is my joy to be able to offer this to others.

My heart is to help you see the truth of yourself in the light of God’s presence with you. God has been present with and attending to you since before you were born (Ps. 139:13-16), but this broken world, broken people (including ourselves), and our spiritual enemy, cloud our sense of God’s reality, casting darkness and causing confusion in how we experience ourselves and God. Spiritual direction is a process in right-sizing reality, recognizing how God is revealing Himself through all aspects of your life. The goal of my practice is to provide you with a space to consciously recognize and re-attach securely to the God who was, and is, and is to come, the God who loves you and calls you, and Who will one day complete His work of making you and all those in His kingdom perfect in love like Jesus (Phil. 1:6).

A typical Spiritual Direction session with me will start with intentionally drawing our awareness to God through either reading a selection from scripture, listening to worshipful music, or gazing on an image or painting. After praying together to ask God to help direct the session, I will mostly listen and ask questions as you share whatever seems most important for you to discuss. Hopefully throughout the time we can see together where and how God is at work in your various life circumstances to love you and make you more like Jesus. Sessions will last roughly 45 minutes and I will close them in prayer. You do not have to be a Christian to receive Spiritual Direction, but know that my goal is to help you to see how the God of the Bible is present in your life. I am gentle in this process, given my own experience of deconstructing my faith, walking away from God, and then coming back to faith years later, but I want to be clear about Who I pray to and Who I direct my clients towards. Spiritual Direction is typically offered once per month, per client, and my base rate is $50/ session after an initial free consultation session.

God is at work and present in every area of our lives. My hope is that through Spiritual Direction you will grow in your ability to recognize God’s presence with you, receive His abounding love for you, and to realign your life so that you are marked more and more by love like Jesus.

About Me

It is a joy to get to journey with you as you explore and discern God’s invitations and the needs of your soul in this particular season of your life. I enjoy getting to work with individuals and groups in discovering how God has been forming the story of their life. I am drawn towards helping others find personal healing in order to more freely live out their unique gifts and callings. Particular interests include exploring seasons of discernment, recovering from burnout and compassion fatigue, the personal retreat experience and the use of art in contemplative practices. I received my training as a spiritual director through the Institute of Spiritual Formation (ISF) at Biola University and obtained my MA in Spiritual Formation and Soul Care. In addition to spiritual direction, I also work as a psychotherapist in private practice as a licensed clinical social worker in the state of California. Tele-direction sessions currently available.

Spiritual direction has personally changed the trajectory of my life. After a traumatic encounter, the Lord guided me to come alongside my Spiritual Director to discern how God was speaking to me through this experience. After a two and half year time of discernment, I shift to another life course leaving behind a twenty-four-year chaplain career to become a Spiritual Director. The adventure has been beautifully hard and life-giving to my soul. I love the thought of having the opportunity to journey with others in the discovery they find.

During twenty-four years of chaplain ministry, including hospice, hospital care, and pastoring, I have witnessed Christ as the Shepherd of my soul and the souls of others. In the sacred place with others, the Lord's presence faithfully invites us to His loving care. He guides with gentleness, precision, silence, and deep encouragement. Being the Shepherd of each person's soul He knows how to speak exactly to each of us for our understanding and clarity. A holy rhythm in spiritually sitting with another is listening to His invitations with them. If you are looking for a safe presence to sit, process, and prayerfully listen together in your journey of faith here is my invitation to you. Peace to you.
