About Me

As a women's ministry leader in an urban church, a mom (both adoptive and biological), and a seasoned mentor, I delight in seeing God at work in the lives of women of different ages, races, and life situations. I particularly prioritize listening to the stories of women who have previously felt unheard or marginalized. Together we look for how God is working through daily life and how He is inviting you to respond to these circumstances.

In addition to my training in spiritual direction through the Selah Certificate program, I have a BA in Psychology and a Master of Social Work. Prior to becoming a spiritual director, I was the coordinator of a housing program for teenage moms, a foster care case manager, and a birth parent counselor. These experiences have allowed me to understand the needs of women experiencing life disruptions and loss. I have also been significantly shaped by a racially diverse culture throughout my adult life and credit my experience in majority Black churches for a huge part of my spiritual development.

Twelve years ago my husband and I adopted a two year old boy with medical needs from China. In the midst parenting two other children and mentoring and discipling women in my church and community, my life became focused on all kinds of therapy appointments, surgeries, and further training on how to parent a child who had experienced trauma. As I provided support for my family, I also began to more fully accept how the Holy Spirit wanted to support and strengthen me. I have especially loved using imaginative imagery in prayer, while staying rooted in Scripture and Christian orthodoxy.

I look forward to connecting to women who want to grow in relationship with Christ, who need a place to sort out their thoughts and questions about their faith or religion, who feel unheard and misunderstood, and are experiencing some level of brokenness. I also welcome women who are ministering to others and need a place where you are heard, respected, and pointed back to God's love.

God made space for us in his covenant family. We are embraced as children. We respond by making space for God and entering that space to be with him. My practice is to journey alongside of people who are seeking to "be" with and to live deeply in God's presence. This spiritual life is not hidden inside us. Living in the presence of God, being in touch with God's Spirit, being fined tuned to God's sensitivities opens our hearts and sharpens our awareness of the movement of God in all of our ordinary activities among ordinary people. The true spiritual life is not an escape from life. It is a confrontation with life. It is not a leisure-time activity or a diversion from life, but journey where we find space to "be" with God as we partner with God gathering, reconciling and uniting this world to himself.

I have been a missional pastor for over 30 years working in and through local church communities, (primarily Chicago, IL and Columbus, Ohio), international ministry partnerships, (such as Ghana, South Africa and Zambia), and in hospital settings (particularly Rush University, Chicago, IL). I have a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology, an Masters of Divinity with an emphasis in pastoral care and counseling), and a Doctorate of Ministry in Evangelism. I am certified as a life coach and actively apply this set of skills with developing leaders. I also have over 3000 hours in Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE). I am trained by the Sustainable Faith School of Spiritual direction with an emphasis of Ignatian spirituality.

I have been married for 38 years and have three children and nine grandchildren. I am interested in a good story, mentoring young leaders - particularly men, the arts, woodworking, and outdoor activities (i. e. hiking, canoeing, backpacking, and skiing) and traveling to explore new places.

I believe God is present and available in every moment of our lives. When meeting for spiritual direction we take notice of God's grace in your life. The hour we spend together is all about you and is for you. My role is to walk with you in embracing the transformation God desires for you.

I have been engaged in the art and practice of spiritual direction since 2014. I started my training under the teaching of Dr. Susan Reese in the Listening People to Life program through Sioux Falls Seminary. Upon completion of the life-giving program in 2016, I wrapped up my Master's degree in 2018. Prior to and during my seminary training, I worked in community and economic development serving low-income and rural communities. It was good work, and I am grateful for the experiences and the many impactful people I met along the way.

The unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) under Rev. Dr. Karl Van Harn taught me to pay attention to the areas where I needed growth, which stretched me farther than I could have imagined. The time spent with this CPE group was the catalyst that challenged me and gave me confidence to enter into this work vocationally.

Participating in the two-year Transforming Community under the teaching of Ruth Haley Barton was enlightening and truly transforming. I have long been drawn to the spiritual practices that Christians down through the ages have used to open themselves to God's transforming work. TC16 gave me a framework of intentionality for the transformation I sought.

I have a deeply held passion for soul care, which I have been immersed in throughout my 30 year career in professional psychotherapy and consulting. Emotional well-being and spiritual peace are intricately connected. As such, anything that improves the psyche enriches the soul, and vice versa.

I’ve been immersed in meditation throughout my adult life, and have had a long-standing grounding in Contemplative traditions of Christianity. This began with my introduction to Centering Prayer in 1993, and was followed by becoming a facilitator to teach Centering Prayer through Contemplative Outreach of Colorado. I've continued to value the on-going retreats and meditation training I've engaged in since then. I received the Certificate in Spiritual Direction from St John's School of Theology in Saint Cloud, Minnesota in June of 2024. This two-year immersion in Spiritual Direction is based in the contemplative roots of our Christian faith, beginning with the Desert Fathers and Mothers, and including Benedictine and Ignation traditions. I love this focus in this program on humility, stability, and listening for the still-speaking God in each person's life.

l’m happy to have now entered that phase of life in which I can re-focus my long-standing work as a trauma therapist into a more direct focus on tending to soul.

My approach to our work together is collaborative. I’ll work compassionately and respectfully with you to enhance and deepen your spiritual walk. I spent much of my life working hard to tame my own inner chaos by trying to be “good". At the same time, like a seed underground, the truer work of God’s love was taking root and growing into something far more interesting and beautiful than my own efforts could accomplish. The practice of spiritual direction has been a gift to me as I am learning to sink deeper in to God’s love for me and listen as He calls me to the life He has given me. It is a humbling privilege and joy to be able to sit and provide space for others as they are invited to see how they are uniquely and beautifully made. I truly enjoy noticing with them the evidence of God’s movement in their lives, taking heart that none of us are abandoned or alone.

I live in Northern California with my husband of 30 years and value a slow and simple life. We fancy ourselves to be suburban farmers and love working in the garden and tending the ground where we live. I am also a piano teacher, and enjoy songwriting, poetry, nature, and hanging out with my adult children.

I and my husband have recently transplanted to the Midwest U.S.A. after serving as global workers in Asia for more than 34 years.

I love walking alongside women in ministry and have been journeying with others, offering a compassionate learning space as a spiritual director. My past ministry experience encouraging women propelled me to complete a Life Coaching certification and B.A. in Biblical Counselling. These tools have been a platform for deepening prayer movements within my more recent ministry role as a spiritual director, emphasising the direct connection between spiritual direction and prayer. I see this as a conversation not simply between two people but between two people and God. I believe prayer is central to being attentive to God’s presence and to one’s experience of the presence, which is at the very core of spiritual direction.

I have been impacted by Thomas Merton’s description of a spiritual director as one who cares for the whole person and helps another ‘recognise and follow the inspirations of grace in his life, in order to arrive at the end to which God is leading him.’ My heritage and life in Asia have given me a rich experience of sharing tea/hosting, which [for me] is symbolic of spiritual direction. Author Susan Philips highlights the spiritual director’s “… job… to be a host to a time of reflection focused on the other person’s experience of the holy… trying to keep… on course toward a sense of God [and His presence].”

I received spiritual direction training through Stewards of The Mystery program and I am available to meet for spiritual direction over the phone or via Zoom. My husband David and I have been married for over 46 years, and we make our home in southern Indiana. I find great joy in being grandmother of three and I take pleasure in quilting, gardening and being outside in nature.

I received my Spiritual Direction training at the Institute for Spiritual Formation of Talbot School of Theology, Biola University where I graduated with my M.A. in Spiritual Formation and Soul Care . During that time I participated in the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises (Nineteenth annotation) for two years. I also have a doctorate in Intercultural Education which empowers me to provide intercultural spiritual direction.

My own spiritual directors have continued to be my companions in my journey of faith and life. I experienced God's unconditional love and acceptance through them and have been called to, in turn, provide a safe space for others who are eager to discern God's will and experience His love. It is the glory of God to conceal things,

It is a glorious journey to seek out the things of God and to hear him for ourselves and to know Him. in community with a companion it seems we often gain clarity we sometimes miss alone. I love hearing God for myself but with others that joy is multiplied. Making space to listen and wonder and hear together never gets old. I have been in pastoral ministry for over 30 years walking with others, growing and learning together in discipleship. I’m currently on staff of Church of the Holy Cross, an Anglican church near Charleston SC where my husband is the rector. We have three grown children and love to spend time hiking, running, reading, walking the beaches nearby, connecting with our kids and our friends. I am currently not taking new directees.

I am in a love affair with God, the Source of my life; with Jesus, the Lover of my soul; and with the Holy Spirit, the Power of God in me. The passion of my life has always been to create a holy space where individuals can encounter the living, transforming God. This passion came alive working most of my life in the ministry of worship through music and the arts. Now God has called me to use this passion in the surprisingly similar ministry of spiritual direction.

My ministry is called "Sacred Listening," a ministry of holy listening in a sacred space set aside for three of us - you, me, and the Holy Spirit. We sit together in silence, prayer, listening, and love, with the goal of greater intimacy with God, and the willingness to be transformed by His grace. The Holy Spirit is the primary Director. I listen with one ear to your heart, and the other ear to His Heart, discerning with you His presence and movement in your life, and encouraging you to recognize and respond to that movement.

I welcome into "Sacred Listening" anyone who desires a more intimate relationship with the living God, anyone who is in a time of transition, anyone who has questions. No questions are off limits here. Know that I have been through times of darkness and struggle in my life, and God has given me great compassion for others who face their own darkness and struggle. This sacred space is completely confidential and filled with mercy and grace.

My background is a foundation in Reformed theology through Calvin University; training in the person and work of the Holy Spirit through Dunamis, PRMI; and certification in Spiritual Direction from the Dominican Center, Grand Rapids, MI. I have a spiritual director myself, and I am also under peer group supervision. My favorite things include reading good books, walking in nature, and playing with grandchildren.

I love companioning people in every stage of their journey with Jesus; helping them to find God in the events of their everyday lives. I am especially passionate about helping others to find God’s unforced rhythms of grace because of my own experience of burnout in full-time ministry. Also, with my background in nutrition and fitness, I love helping people in the care of their bodies as well as their souls. The biggest part of my direction is with missionaries in different life stages from initially going to the field to transitioning off the field. I also companion ministry leaders and spiritual directors.

I also speak and coach on the Enneagram with specializations in transformation via understanding the instinctual variants (subtypes) and Harmony Triads.

My initial direction training was with Sister Joan of the Queen of Angels Monastery in Mount Angel, Oregon back when there were no programs for protestants. I went on to do more training with Sustainable Faith.

Ann has a passion to serve leaders through spiritual direction, coaching, and wise consultation. Her Spiritual Formation and Direction Master's degree from Evangelical Theological Seminary, along with a coaching certificate from "Coaching 4 Clergy," and a Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Therapy and Psychology from Towson University affords Ann the opportunity to champion leaders holistically.

She brings thirty-five years of life, leadership, and ministry experience to her practice. As a companion, Ann creates the environment to accompany you into the presence of God to connect, listen, and discern his leading and voice. The stage is set to experience God's presence through healing and creative invitation as you bring your heartfelt concerns and practical life issues to the direction session. Additionally and as needed, attention is given to life routines, spiritual exercises, and prayer practices that boost interaction with God in daily activities.

Ann sees inner healing as a branch of spiritual direction. Persons engaging in spiritual direction sometimes find places in their hearts that need restoration. This is especially true as we confront the disorganization, deconstruction, and health concerns in our world today. Ann facilitates an approach to inner healing that encourages direct interaction with Jesus around every difficulty and issue. Adequate connection with Jesus is always a priority.

It is a joy to sit next to another follower of Jesus and help them tune in to what God has done, is doing, and wants to do in their life. Together, we can explore how God is waiting to be found in the grocery store, BMV, and forest so that you can know more of him and who he created you to be.

I was ordained in The Wesleyan Church in 2020. I completed a 2-year training course in spiritual direction at College Wesleyan Church in 2023. I received a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Ministry and Philosophy/Theology degree from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2017. In 2019, I received a Master of Practical Theology degree (MDiv equivalent) from the same institution. Presently, I serve as an Assistant Pastor who oversees discipleship and first impressions at Lakeview Wesleyan Church in Marion, Indiana where I have worked since late 2017. Additionally, since 2022, I have served as the Assistant Male Chaplain at Grant County Jail.

After completing a spiritual formation program at the Transforming Center, Wheaton, IL (2009-2011), I trained as a spiritual director in the Franciscan Spirituality tradition at the Chiara Center, Springfield, IL (2013-2015). I also double-trained as a spiritual director and leader of the Ignatian Exercises in the Jesuit tradition through Loyola University Chicago (2020-2023). As an exercitant I have completed the Nineteenth Annotation of Ignatius Loyola.

I spent my entire career as a professional scientist in the biomedical sciences (1975-2013) and am currently Professor Emeritus of Physiology at Loyola University Chicago. I have expertise in neurophysiology, physics, mathematics, and astronomy.

I provide spiritual direction via Zoom or in-person through my local church, Christ Church of Oak Brook, and Loyola University Ministry, Maywood, IL. I continue as a directee under a trusted Jesuit spiritual director and am part of a 7-member peer-group supervision fellowship. I have trained in both the Traditional Enneagram and the Harmony Enneagram.

I am willing to walk with people at different levels of Christian spiritual maturity. I listen carefully to those with doubts and who see disparities between modern scientific discovers and biblical interpretations. I understand the power of beauty and awe in God’s creation.

I've always had a desire to go deeper beneath the surface of things. To be curious about the why, how, and what of another person’s experience. To understand the heart of a matter.

After I began to follow Christ, this translated to my faith journey, as well. I wanted to go deeper with God, to really know his heart and to connect on a “feeling” level. There is great anchoring in knowing the truth of God’s character and His word, but without knowing how God feels about us, without being rooted and grounded in his love, knowledge about God remains just that: intellectual knowledge. But, the good news is that knowledge with experience can be transformational. Truth plus an encounter with God can become a point of transformation, of healing, of becoming.

After many years of working as a professional counselor in private practice, I began a 2 year training program with the Sustainable Faith School of Spiritual Direction to become a spiritual director. I wanted to combine my ability to create a safe listening space for others with the desire to actively bring God’s presence into the conversation. To create space for others to encounter God in a fresh way, to help them listen to his voice of love, and to facilitate a deeper journey into God’s embrace.

After completing the program with Sustainable Faith in May 2019, I have found it to be incredibly meaningful to serve others with the ministry of spiritual direction. I've also enjoyed planning & facilitating group workshops that combine art & faith, which are designed to help participants engage with God through creative and contemplative practices.

I believe spiritual direction can be a life-giving experience, similar to what Christian psychiatrist Curt Thompson, MD, refers to as the experience of “knowing and being known.” It’s the practice of being present to the soul of another person, giving them freedom to discover their “true self” and explore who they really are. It’s the opportunity to be authentically heard and seen, while also being accepted and validated. In this way, a spiritual direction session becomes a sacred space to be heard, seen, known, and cared for, along with the awareness that God is present and active in our midst.

My style of spiritual direction is to listen intuitively to what's being said, both verbally and non-verbally. Sometimes I use expressive arts or mindfulness exercises to help people connect with their bodies and souls, which in turn helps bring integration between the mind and heart. Sometimes I use quiet music or a spiritual practice to help a directee tune in to what God might be saying in the present moment.

My goal is to create a space where you can listen to the sound of your soul, while also tuning into God’s heart. I also offer a free 20 minute consultation (via phone or Zoom) to determine if we would be a good fit to work together.
