About Me

I love companioning people in every stage of their journey with Jesus; helping them to find God in the events of their everyday lives. I am especially passionate about helping others to find God’s unforced rhythms of grace because of my own experience of burnout in full-time ministry. Also, with my background in nutrition and fitness, I love helping people in the care of their bodies as well as their souls. The biggest part of my direction is with missionaries in different life stages from initially going to the field to transitioning off the field. I also companion ministry leaders and spiritual directors.

I also speak and coach on the Enneagram with specializations in transformation via understanding the instinctual variants (subtypes) and Harmony Triads.

My initial direction training was with Sister Joan of the Queen of Angels Monastery in Mount Angel, Oregon back when there were no programs for protestants. I went on to do more training with Sustainable Faith.

I was also trained to take people through the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius by Mike Higgins from Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life, Portland (SEEL PDX).

About Me

As a spiritual director, my desire is to help you become more aware of how God is weaving in and through your life.

I grew up in a Christian family, but it wasn’t until college that I began to understand Jesus’ invitation to personal relationship. Then teaching English in a Catholic school, and working in business, broadened my understanding of Jesus, of spiritual practices, and of the various ways God meets his people. I eventually was ordained to ministry within my local Christian Church in Southern California, where I served for a number of years.

I wanted to pursue training in Spiritual Direction, so I entered The Journey (offered through The Leadership Institute of Orange, CA.). Since then, God has provided opportunities to further expand my knowledge & experience, including attaining a Masters in leadership and ministry, completing the St. Ignatius exercises, and Enneagram certification. I presently am the Executor Director of The Unfolding Soul, a ministry to help people and those in ministry leadership become more deeply in love with Jesus, better navigate their life crossroads, and experience rest and spiritual renewal.

I would be honored to come alongside you as you pursue spiritual direction. Our monthly time together can help you process what’s stirring within, as you experience the goodness of God, the love of Jesus, and the fresh wind of the Holy Spirit. I am available to meet in person, over the phone, or via Zoom, whichever is your preference. (I know firsthand how this practice can have a spiritual impact in your life, for it certainly has in mine.)

I grew up and spent many years in Southern California and lived in the suburbs of Chicago for five years. 13 years ago I relocated to the Springfield/Eugene area of Oregon where I live with my pastor husband, Bruce and enjoy time with my grown children and grandchildren. I thoroughly enjoy outdoor activities, creative endeavors, reading, and always a good cup of tea.

My own hunger and pursuit of the manifest presence of God has taken me on the inward adventure of solitude in the quiet of monastaries, and on geographical adventures as far away as Ethiopia, South Korea, and China — all of which draw me home to God in my own backyard. I am an active follower and friend of Jesus in all the roles of my life, which include but are not limited to being a wife, mother, grandmother, spiritual director, and CFO of a Professional Corporation.

A certified Spiritual Director and Supervisor with a Master of Arts degree in Christian Education, I earned my Certificate in Spiritual Formation from the Renovare Institute. I am a Spiritual Director with an M.A. in Spiritual Formation & Soul Care from the Institute for Spiritual Formation at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University as well as an M.A. in New Testament Studies. I have a very particular passion for those who feel stuck in their spiritual journey or who feel on the outskirts of what should be or what others are experiencing with God or the church. It is easy to find ourselves wondering "what is wrong with me," without any sense of where to turn or what to do in order to be "fixed" or return to "normal". In reality, everyone's journey with God is unique and I feel a deep sense of joy in helping others develop their own unique experience with God.

I have an interest in various personality theories (I am most familiar with Myers-Briggs and the Enneagram) as they relate to spirituality and enjoy exploring the inner work of the Holy Spirit as it relates to a person's individuality rather than what the expected "normal" is supposed to look like. I take particular delight in exploring where a person's emotional (heart) experience/theology contrasts with learned (head) theology and working through the tension that is found there.

I also have experience with inner healing and deliverance prayer ministry, which I generally do independent of direction, but these skills can be useful during direction in rare and particular instances. Those who are desiring exclusively the inner healing/deliverance ministry (either one session or several) are welcome to contact me for that purpose as well, without any expectation to continue in a Spiritual Direction relationship beyond that.

Regardless of where you are coming from or what your hopes and expectations may be, my hope for you is that you find a space where you feel heard, known, and loved as you are, without needing to change or grow in order to be accepted. As a spiritual director I have a front row seat where I get to watch God work in the lives of the individuals with whom I meet. Helping others hear and respond to God’s voice is one of the greatest privileges any man could ever experience. Some define spiritual direction as “holy listening” and if that means “listening to the Holy Spirit” then I totally concur with that definition for truly the Holy Spirit is the ultimate spiritual director

I was first introduced to the idea of spiritual direction in 2001 when I enrolled in a nine-month version of Ignatius’s Spiritual Exercises. This ultimate lead me to pursue a Certificate in Spiritual Direction at George Fox Evangelical Seminary. Prior to that experience my studies at Dallas Theological Seminary (ThM) and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (DMin) had provided me with a solid biblical and theological grid from which to launch into spiritual theology.

Since beginning pastoral ministry in two small church in rural South Dakota, I have pastored congregations in Khartoum, Sudan in East Africa; Mission, KS; Portland, Oregon and currently in Longview, Washington. From 1990 until 2008 I taught a variety of Spiritual Formation Courses at Multnomah Biblical Seminary where I am currently serving as an adjunct professor. For five years my wife and I also hosted a retreat center for pastors and their spouses.

My wife, Evelyn, and I have enjoyed over 50 years of marriage. We have been blessed with three children, all of whom are currently walking with the Lord and who are providing spiritual leadership to our nine grandchildren.

As a spiritual director I am privileged to work with any Christ-follower who desires to move forward in their spiritual journey, but I do feel a special affinity towards pastors and their special soul care needs.

God is a true artist, and each story He is writing is full of creativity and beauty (even in the midst of the darkness we so often find). Having grown up in the church, my story has been one of rediscovering my faith apart from the legalism and performance based Christianity I grew up in. I love to hold space for people as they reflect on the journey of their souls. God won my heart over 30 years ago during a particularly difficult time in my life. Ever since I have been drawn to conversations exploring where God intersects with the joys and challenges of real life. In 2016, I began having these conversations as a spiritual director.

I am a Seattle native who graduated from the University of Washington with a BA in Psychology and Speech Communications. I received my spiritual direction training through SoulFormation’s Academy and School of Spiritual Direction and am an active member of their community of spiritual directors. I also offer supervision to spiritual directors and facilitate Space for God retreats. My husband and I live in community near the University of Washington campus and have 3 grown/almost-grown kids.

It is my deepest joy to serve as spiritual director in Seattle - either in person or on line.

My underlying conviction is that God is always present, always active, and always loving. I believe that there is much more on offer in our lives with God, if we would only stop and listen, and listen again. I believe that God's doors are already flung open to us and that much of our journey is simply choosing to "begin again". And again. In doing so we learn to walk with the risen Christ in open honesty, free to receive His love. Having drunk deeply of His love we grow in our desire to join Him in relationship and in His projects.

Together, with my wife Renee, we have founded Soul Care Seattle at The Layne: an urban retreat home in Seattle, dedicated as a quiet and safe place for people to explore and deepen their relationship with God in solitude and community. Either virtually or in person, at The Layne, we seek to serve individuals who are in crisis, a season of change, or simply want more out of their relationship with Christ. We have a special heart for companioning those who are in ministry, experience loss and/or infertility, as well as those who identify as LGBT or same sex attracted and their friends and family.

We offer the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius of Loyola, the 19th Annotation. This 9 month prayer retreat in daily life begins each year in September.

About Me

Welcome Friend, my name is Jen Manglos. There are many ways I could describe myself, but I like to start with the truest part - I am God’s beloved. And as a spiritual director, supervisor, pastor, and writer, I delight in helping others discover their own belovedness in God.

I graduated from the Institute for Spiritual Formation at Talbot Theological Seminary in May 2010. During my time there I received training in spiritual direction and discovered the profound gift of creating space for another to be listened to and to notice God’s invitations in life. I currently offer individual and group direction, as well as individual and group supervision and pilgrimage coaching, and am available to speak at retreats and conferences. Embodiment, hospitality, and storytelling characterize my approach, as well as pilgrimage, having completed the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage through Spain in 2018. I am available to meet in-person in Seattle or online.

I formerly coordinated retreats for Saddleback Church’s Rancho Capistrano property before moving to Seattle, Washington in 2019 for a pastoral role with Bethany Community Church (finished role in 2021). One day, I hope to open my own retreat house to care for pastors and church leaders, inviting them into “unforced rhythms of grace” with God. Athanasius says, "The Risen Christ makes life a perpetual feast," and I thoroughly enjoy this feast of a life through steaming cups of coffee, walks and hikes through the PNW, sharing meals with dear friends, and discovering new films, books, musicals, and podcasts.
