There are several people I know who regularly choose a word to focus on which represents the theme in their lives. Choosing a word helps them to be aware and stay focused on the chosen topic. If I were to choose a word for this season of my life it would be “boundaries”. It appears to be the thread throughout nearly all of my life in the recent months, in one way or another.

Considering boundaries within relationships, pondering the changes in boundaries with an emerging adult son, seeing the need to recognize the boundary (capacity) of an aging body, seeing the need to discern the boundary around expectations I place on myself, and the list goes on.

So I began to pray and read Scripture. I discovered God has quite a bit to say about boundaries. I noticed God used boundaries to provide structure for how to live in peace both physically and relationally. As I looked at the various Scriptures on the subject I saw boundaries given, called on to be respected, warned against being moved, and declared as being fixed by the Lord himself.

What a great comfort it was to be reminded that He is at work fixing all the boundaries needed in my life. My part is to seek and discern where His hand has drawn them. As I seek, I have others who walk with me which facilitates an awareness that I am not alone, and for this I am deeply grateful.

”You have fixed all the boundaries of the earth; you have made summer and winter.”  Psalm 74:17
