According to Eugene Peterson in his book Working the Angles, the pastor’s priorities in ministry should be prayer, reading Scripture, and providing spiritual direction. But there seems to be a fine line that pastors are often asked to walk: How might I best provide direction for people within my church? Should I provide direction for people within my church? In this panel discussion, three pastors who are also spiritual directors will consider these important questions.
This panel discussion won’t simply be geared to pastors or ministry leaders, though. The question of dual relationships with directees is one for every director to carefully consider, and this panel of seasoned and experienced spiritual directors will offer thoughtful insights into when, if ever, dual relationships might be appropriate.
The Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Khorey
Elizabeth is an ordained Anglican priest, pastor-teacher, liturgist and spiritual director dedicated to nurturing wholeness and holiness in congregational settings and in the individuals she companions. She curates sacred experiences to encourage intimacy with God in a variety of settings: retreats, one-on-one spiritual direction, congregational worship, clergy consultation, or as a conference speaker. Elizabeth seeks to discover ways to develop vibrant human flourishing in all spheres of ordinary life.
As an associate pastor for ten years in a blossoming church plant in Southern California, she established congregational care and contoured liturgies with art and spiritual practices. Elizabeth currently hosts a monthly contemplative Eucharistic gathering in Orange, California. Her doctoral focus was on the intersection between the arts, faith and liturgical worship for the formation of the whole person. She facilitates spiritual formation dynamics for artists in residency cohorts, consults pastors and staffs for the spiritual formation of congregations, and assists students of all ages with their development in faith. Together, they attentively watch for where God is at play in the world and in themselves and actively respond to the invitations for well-being as they participate in the kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven.

Ryan Bradley
Ryan began studying at the Institute for Spiritual Formation (as part of their inaugural class) with a personal desire for spiritual growth. At first, he believed that training in spiritual direction within that seminary program would help prepare him to serve God in other ways, but he did not expect the ministry of direction to be a “fit” for him. Instead, he has now been offering spiritual direction for over twenty years.
While pursuing doctoral studies in spirituality at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D. C., Ryan began discerning a call to pastoral ministry. Upon returning to Southern California, he helped plant and pastor a church while teaching at Biola University’s Torrey Honors Institute. He later moved to California’s Central Valley, where he served as the pastor of a small Anglican church for eight years.
More recently, he began a new ministry called “the Micah Project Merced,” with his wife, Juliet, as co-pastor. Adapting the language of Micah 6:8, their vision is “Walking together with God; with justice, kindness, and humility.” This includes a variety of ministries in the local community with a long-term goal of planting a diverse church that brings together spiritual formation, evangelism, and justice.
Ryan is also currently serving as Senior Faculty and a supervisor for the Selah training program in spiritual direction.
Ryan and Juliet live in Merced, California with their two adopted children and a goldendoodle. Ryan leads a local chapter of the Silent Book Club and serves on the Merced County Library Advisory Commission, both of which reflect his love of books and reading. His favorite thing about offering spiritual direction is rediscovering God’s heart as he sees Him at work in the lives of directees.

Dan Crowley
Dan has been in vocational ministry for over 21 years. For the last 15 years, he’s served as the Spiritual Formation Pastor at Sandals Church, a multi-site church based in Riverside, CA. In addition to founding and developing their spiritual formation and soul care program, he also provides spiritual direction to the campus pastors and ministers. With his work at Sandals and beyond, he has had the privilege of training spiritual direction practices to hundreds of church leaders – both individually and in groups. He earned his BS in Organizational Leadership from Biola University and MA in Soul Care from Talbot Theological Seminary, where he also received a spiritual direction certificate. He’s been married to his high school sweetheart, Christina, for the last 32 years. They have 3 adult children and 2 grandchildren. In his downtime, he likes to golf, follow all things San Diego Padres, and enjoy good food with great friends.
